And you thought The Designers Republic started the trend

From tech to retro… all art and design has roots and inspiration. I love seeing how things develop, change and get recycled…

Check these out. Chances are you’ll recognize a lot of these recreated by modern designers.

Here’s the whole book of ‘vintage’ logo designs: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_carl/sets/72157604144345854/   It’s awesome!

Now when a beginner designer shouts “rip!” of TDR, YWFT, ISO50 etc. for the 10 thousandth bloody time, you can send them here for a little history lesson and slap them into place like the spoilt lil-child that they are. (The astute among you will even notice something veryyyyyy similar to the ywft logo in there.)

So yes, my good friends… It’s time to admit that we artists and designers are quite inspired. Most designers in other fields have no problem with it. Architects I work with promote their inspirations - Type designers love to show what master their latest font is based on. Product designers do it too (check out how all the apple products you love had ‘former lives’ as Braun products in the 50’s )

All great and beautiful stuff.

Now, dear art directors and graphic-kids, go design for the love-of-designing why don’t ya!

  1. I thought that was a modern look - but I guess it’s not! Those are awesome!

Craziness about the apple design too!

  2. ha that’s so awesome. Thanks for sharing. I see a lot of modern logos in those ‘oldies’!

  3. So true - it’s all history repeating and that’s the way it should be. Repeating - but out of that is born something entirely new…

    yet not…

    it’s romantic in a way.

  4. Too funny - i just saw a post the other day complaining that something was a rip off of Mike Young - which led to others saying Mike Young ripped off TDR and then I come here and see yet more roots of the style.

It’s funny that even today’s styles (more organic, less technical) still seem to reference this style - which was referencing Swiss design of the 40s and 50s… I wonder what they were referencing.

    Interesting post as always.

  5. That’s really interesting about apple - the ipod is almost exact! Craziness!

  6. wow that’s iso50, Designer Republik, gmunk, 2003-2008 designs all wrapped into one

to be fair tho - i think they all put their own spin on them… a good logo is a good logo -

    Very interesting thank you!

  7. waw…awesome

  8. The 1950’s BMW micro-car “Isetta” bears a curious resemblence to the 1st generation iMacs, I do believe.
